Nothing but Road

So since I last left you in sweet suspense, wondering where I am and what I’ve been doing, here is your long awaited answer …. Driving. Nothing more, Nothing less, Just Driving. Since I left Adelaide, the next obstacle in my way was the Nullarbor Highway. It is as exciting as it sounds…. There is nothing to see and is ridiculously boring. It it a 2700km Highway of nothing but straight roads and flat lands. Here is a preview of what my day looked: 7am start, another straight road…. Yay. Hour of driving in nothing….. what is that I see? A TURN! I FEEL SO ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!! Awwwwww turn is over…. Back to flat lands….

It boasts two things: 1) The longest golf course in the world, which sounds amazing but is really kind of a cheap way to get the title. You start at the first hole, Play It, then get back into your car and drive 100km or something to the next hole, and so on. Not that I tried it but that to me is false advertising.  2) The longest straight road in Australia, spanning 145.5 km. So when one is faced with that what should you do? I’ll tell you! Cruise control set to 100km/h, steering wheel lock, alarm set for 1h 20mins (as a margin of safety of course), then  sit back and have yourself a nap!

Now I would have tried this, except for my ongoing fear of smashing into the local wildlife…. One thing you get use to when driving in Australia is the sight of road kill. Almost every animal I’ve come to see, Except for a Koala (YAY), I’ve seen it on the road first…. Dead. Though there are some things that you just don’t expect…..

Yes that is a camel, well actually there were three…..

and to think, when I saw this sign I laughed.

I have also learn the literal meaning of Highway Robbery, due to the fact that it’s the only road and due to the fact they are the only petrol stations within 500km, I have had to fill an SUV with $1.895/L Regular unleaded Petrol….. Sigh

  1. Well you must have made it through to civilization by now! Hope it was good fun along the long straight way.

Haha, a couple weeks ago we were so happy petrol was at $1.96/litre because it had been nearly $2.20 for months. Now it’s around $2.12 and we don’t seem to notice anymore.

    Enjoy WA!! Hope it’s beautiful!
