The simple process of traveling

So I recently took a quick trip down to Belize in order to accomplish two things: 1) Dive the Blue Hole 2) Renew my visa for Mexico. Both were accomplished, yet both not how I expected.

From Playa del Carmen there is a night bus straight to Belize city. Easy no? Well more “No” than “Easy”. I arrive at the bus station at 11:45pm and board the bus. It takes about 3ish hours to get to the border where all the fun begins. Arriving at the Mexican boarder we all get out and get our passports stamped for leaving the country, then reboard the bus for a short drive to the Belize boarder. We get out of the bus and line up at now 3:30/3:45am to go through immigration only for me to be told I’m not allowed in….. Why? Because he is grumpy? “I don’t think your coming into my country for tourism but because you have to leave Mexico”

Well I’m diving in your country no? I’m staying there seeing places I’ve never seen and spending money in your country no? Yeash. So at least another Canadian chick got turned away too. Now we have lost the rest of the Bus ticket because, well it has now left without us. TAXI!  Back up to the Mexican boarder for them to laugh at us because we got rejected. They say it happens more on weekends.

So what advice do they have for us? “Here’s how you get in…..”

Option 1: Wait till the guards change shift and go again.

Option 2: Take the ferry crossing and go through immigration on the island, plus there is only one ferry a day so they can’t immediately send you back.

(Mexicans know all the good secrets of smuggling)

I like option 2. So again continue with the cab back up to Chetumal where I need to catch the ferry at 3pm. I’ve had three hours of on/off sleep and now have to kill 8-9 hours. Time to do what hobo’s do, Sleep on a park bench. Though I realize after a while that I do need to relocate due to birds pooping on me… Sigh…

I finally get on the ferry, It leaves an hour late, which means it arrives at immigration at sundown. Immigration there was the easy part. One question “Have you been to Belize before?” Only so she could know how to respond. “Well welcome to Belize!/Well welcome back to Belize”

We all then load back into the boat to get to our final destination, another island 30 min away. Though by now its dark out. The captain proceeds to get us lost then stuck in shallow water asking people to get out of the boat and push. 1h 45min later we finally arrive and I can go straight to bed.

The Blue Hole though: Sometimes I say Meh, then sometimes I say MEEHH, I rate it as BLERG! I won’t even get started. But here are some not blue hole pictures to reward you for reading my story.
