Rock then Roll

Heading into the heart of Australia, less dense the trees got, and more rocky the terrain turned. Dessert is the name of the game and rocks are the features. The temperature has stayed the same, a balmy 38-40 deg C., though gladly the humidity has dropped from about 90% to 10%. Some nights actually get cool around here.

Hikes are all around as I pass through the West Macdonald Ranges, Kings Canyon, Uluru, and Kata Tjuta. These lands, all historically significant and sacred to the aboriginals, are composed from rock in one way or another. Whether being gorges, canyons, rocky landscapes, or just a big rock, these are the highlights and attractions of the area.

Sunrises and sunsets are among the top times to explore, not only due to the brilliant lights reflected off the landscapes, but also it is the only survivable times to explore. Temperatures soar this time a year to an average of 40 deg Celsius, and with little shade heat stroke is a sure thing.

Remember though, this is the outback, with 600km between towns, you better be able to look after yourself. Breakdowns, delays, anything really. Because the families of the roadkill you see, oh they get their revenge ….. don’t leave your car for a second …..
