Familiar town, with a new look

Back to good ol’ KK. KK, short for Kota Kinabalu, is located in Sabah on Borneo Island. I was here for a couple of days last year on a diving trip, so it’s nice to be somewhat familiar with a city, though it has changed a bit in the last year. Not overly a lot to do in this city but it is the major hub to see most of the “tourist attractions” in the surrounding area. Though for a boringish place it sure does have it’s charms. One of them being it’s “food” night market. Every day of the year these ppl set up their tents and lay out what they have to offer. It’s split up into sections depending on the food you want to get. What kind of sections you ask? Noodles, Rice dishes, BBQ, Seafood, Fruits, Desserts, Drinks. Also attached is like their out door market where fresh mango’s, veggies, spices, all can be sampled and purchased.

It’s a different feeling being able to sit on the pier watching the local fishermen lounging in their boat after a hard days work, while having your fried rice and bbq fish being cooked to order beside you. Then, eating it while the sky lights up with flashes of lightning, revealing an Island off in the distance, but then disappearing once again into the black sky. Kind of a creepy cool.

So after a lot of planning, emails, and calls, I have been able to get the permit and accommodations to climb the great Mt. Kinabalu. The climb is a two day event peaking the summet at 4095m. Not as spectacular as Everest, but then again my fat ass wouldn’t make it to the top of Everest either. This is apparently more realistic. So I have just made the trek to the bottom of the mountain which included a 2.5 hour “bus” ride, which is really just a van that the seats might as well just have been made out of wood planks. Then walking 2 km along the highway to make it to my home for the evening. Puncak Borneo Resort. It is the cheapest lodging in the area and it feels like it too. It’s a roof over my head though. Time to prep for the climb in the morning.
