Enter the Thailand

Jumping from my cozy, quiet island of Tioman, I flew straight into the madness of Phuket. People to my left, People to my right, People above and even on the ground drunk below. Bright lights and noise all around. Not the best of ideas I’ve had, and it didn’t last long either. I jumped ship after two days heading out of the city and back to island life.

Koh Tao was the destination and an overnight ferry was the means to get there. Overnight ferry, what does that conger up in the mind? Regular ferry with seats that recline? Big boat with beds on it? Or a regular seated ferry but just over night? Well let me tell you, in Thailand, it’s none of the above. Think floating orphanage. It is a boat with the whole main level a sleeping quarter. Though the beds are all side by side baby-ass camping style mats down either side of boat. People sleep shoulder to shoulder (very literally) with a fan, if your lucky and it works, servicing 5-6 beds. So weird. Just hope you don’t get a stinky neighbor.

Koh Tao itself is a nice small island chalked full of Dive shops and lodging. Really that is all there is. The main drag of beach probably has more than 300 dive shops, all offering budget diving and accommodation. This is most likely the cheapest place in the world to get your certification levels, for that most come here to do so. As for “fun” dives it is probably one of the cheapest places I’ve seen averaging around $25 per boat dive, rentals included. The diving itself, from people I’ve talked to fantastic! From what I’ve seen meh. Mind you that is mostly my fault. I do travel with a tropical storm wherever I go. The day before I arrived, Sunny days, clear water, calm seas. I arrive, in come the clouds, water vis goes to hell, and so do the seas. Once I finish my last dive, The sun shines first blue sky I’ve seen after over a week of being here. Sigh, just the story of my life.

It’s ok people of Koh Tao, you can have your prime conditions back, I’m leaving. Though I’m not quite sure if I’m ready for Bangkok. I’m thinking this will be a quick stop.
